Not sure, but noticed these shadows the other day and snapped a few photos.

I'm still playing around with my new camera, becoming accustomed to it's size and settings.

I like the interesting shapes and the illusions created by the shadows!

Couldn't get a good shot of the whole top of this china cabinet. The shadows create the illusion that there are more objects and that the dried flower arrangements are so much fuller.

Take one basic outfit and one beautiful accessory, add some creativity and you have many wonderful outfits to take you through the day or various events!

Scarlet Red Rose Dewdrop Scarf Sash

Today's post is the first of a series on how to accessorize.

No matter how creative you may or may not think you are,
a scarf can add so much to even the plainest dress, blouse or jacket.

Check back as I show you some different looks you can achieve with scarves.

Below is a basic white sleeveless blouse and skirt. This Scarlet Red Rose Scarf is worn around the shoulders, the neck and the waist. The vibrant red contrasts nicely with the crisp white fabric.

Wearing a scarf around the shoulders adds a bit of drama, suitable for an evening out or other special occasion.
At the neck, a scarf can accentuate a long neck and visually add length to the torso without being too fussy.
A scarf worn as a sash, is a nice feminine alternative to a belt. In these photos the sash is tied at the back to show off the dewdrop rose detail.

I am the “Queen of Repurposing” in my family. Here are a few things I have recycled/repurposed:

I use recycled packaging materials wherever I can. I reuse tissue paper, cereal boxes (when we buy cereal) and other large boxes and envelopes of all sizes. If these materials still have life in them it seems wasteful to put them in the trash.

Old computer manuals and pocket calendars with pages painted and fabric covers added to use for my art journals.

Small tins for business card holders.

An old ugly wooden picture frame (with wallpaper remnant inserted under glass) as a table tray, an old muffin tin for a drawer organizer and metal condiment caddies to hold office supplies.

I have also used an old glass canister to hold rulers, chipped mugs for pen and pencil holders, glass bottles as vases, and the list goes on!!!

Earth Day Thoughts (continued)

I tend to keep every scrap of fabric, yarn and ribbon. This has sparked my creativity to find ways to incorporate them into garments, scarves and other craft projects, such as art journaling.

Scraps and remnants are perfect for baby quilts and toss pillows. This past winter I started making crocheted ruffled scarves from ribbon and odds and ends of my yarn stash (of which a portion came from someone else’s yarn stash).

I actually started the business, which became my SuZeFashion Etsy shop because I had so much fabric. I tried to sell the fabric and people kept asking me why I didn’t use it. I said I no longer had time to sew for others and wanted to clear up the space. (I had previously had a sewing business making formal wear and accessories, then shifted to interior décor – fewer fittings and last minute surprises!)

Well, I started making journals, scarves and bags again, and the rest is history. I rarely buy new fabric or yarn because I still have a stash to work from. Oh, yes, and I make good use of every scrap of fabric, ribbon and lace as you can see in these journals.

Earth Day this year is Thursday April 22, that's tomorrow, just a day away. When thinking about what to say about Earth Day, I realized I had more to say than I have space for in one blog post. While I have more “green” practices I would like to adopt, all around me are “green” things I have done most of my life just because it makes sense.

6. Tribal Brown Crochet Upcycle Bib Necklace Collar - Upcycled from brown crocheted kerchief, beads, shell buttons, embroidery floss, cording sample.
7. Teal Leaves Applique Cotton Scarf - Constructed from teal slubbed cotton fabric remnant (not enough to make full scarf), magenta thread and teal appliques that have machine satin stitching in magenta, gold and purple (found these years ago in a bin at fabric store that mainly carried remnants and odds/ends from factories, etc.)
8. Black and White Fabric Collage Journal - Constructed from upholstery fabric remnant, fabric samples, garment labels, ribbon, wallpaper samples and composition notebook.

This is my tribute to Earth Day, which this year is Thursday April 22, just a few days away. When I was thinking about what I would say about Earth Day, I realized I had more to say than I have space for in this blog post. Last Monday I posted some photos of scarves from my shop and posed the question, “Why Wear A Scarf?’ I also posted the question on the Etsy forums just to find out different people’s thoughts on the topic.

Well! Did I receive some interesting thoughts and comments! Today I will share these with you (mostly unedited ☺!) along with my original list of 8. They range from practical to creative and humorous. Hope you enjoy reading them as much as I have.

Why wear a scarf? I mean other than to keep your neck warm in the winter?

1. Add instant color to a plain (drab) outfit
2. Make a fashion statement
3. Add the season’s latest colors on the cheap
4. Try a color without committing to a complete wardrobe overhaul
5. Add a feminine touch to a suit
6. Add a touch of whimsy
7. Coordinate elements of your wardrobe
8. Antidote for color deprivation
9. Gives you something to swing around, which is always fun.
10. Wear one in your hair on a bad hair day!
11. I think scarves can add an element of sophistication.
12. They also add a little security so if you're wearing a fitted top and whatever bottoms (but don't want to wear a jacket) you don't feel too exposed.
13. I think scarves are great to transition seasons. I may still be wearing winterish clothes but I can add a springy colorful scarf.
14. It adds a pop of color and flair to my uniform of jeans!! Easy, and relatively inexpensive!
15. A scarf ties a whole outfit together.
16. Because goiters aren't the new black.
17. Because your mother told you to!
18. To cover marks on your neck!
19. Simply because they're cute!
20. Brings focus to good posture and/or a pretty face.

21. Takes focus away from wide hips.
22. To keep parts of my kimono together? <3 scarves- they substitute an obi-age any time, and look so good while doing it!
23. A scarf can be a head covering in an unexpected rain.
24. A sash around the waist, if the waist is something to show off.
25. Folded or rolled for a headband to emphasize eyes and camouflage bad hair or bed head.
26. A scarf can be an emergency tourniquet for a bleeding wound.
27. Maybe a classy bundle for the end of a hobo stick.
28. Because scarves look fabulous!
(I always wear one, year round! I have cotton and silk ones for the summer.)
29. Disguise your super old and wrinkled neck?
30. Because anytime I go out it doesn’t matter what I wear. I usually have on jeans and a cool jacket. If I throw on a long neck scarf I am suddenly very dressed up.
31. It can also visually lengthen the line of your look.
32. It also makes my bust look bigger and my tummy look smaller.
33. I have found it keeps me from getting sick, my throat is a target and gets scritchy scratchy if I don’t wear one.
34. Also the scarves I have look pretty awesome with my coat, it'd be a shame if I didn't wear one
35. A scarf in one of your best colors allows you to wear a suit or blouse in a color, which is not one of your best, & still have a good color next to your face.
36. Cuz you're a hipster.
37. Actually, I love scarves. They make me feel fancy.
38. To hide the food I've dribbled on my shirt ☺
39. To cover your cleavage.
40. Because it’s a gentle neck hug. Everyone needs hugs.

What inspires you?
After some consideration, I realize that I am very inspired by home decor when it comes to designing journal covers. I am especially partial to toss pillows, oriental carpets, plates and furniture. Layers, borders, tassels, textures and bright colors draw my attention and find there way onto my own journals and the ones I make to give away and sell.

Marvelous Monday Winter Storm Musings

The end of winter is in sight, though you wouldn't notice it from the effects of this last winter storm we had last weekend!

We were dumped on Thursday night and it kept on coming! A foot of snow by Friday morning, more than 18 inches by Friday night, more than 2 feet of snow by Saturday night.

It is beautiful! Took lots of photos to share.

We have 2 dogwoods in our front yard, which were laden with snow like whipped cream or frosting! You can see how they were bowed down with the snow as it kept piling on.

Last week I asked for Etsy shops to submit items to be featured today on my blog. I was looking for a favorite item that could be for personal use or that could decorate the home.

I received lots of beautiful and unique items to consider! Wow! There is so much creativity out there! It was hard to select from so many amazing artists and quality products.

For those of you who weren't selected this time, do not dismay! I have some ideas brewing from the items you submitted, so stay tuned.

I finally narrowed down the choices by those who most closely followed the criteria to include some information about their favorite item (and only one item) including why they like it and anything unique about it.

Brownsco says: It is handmade from hypertufa which is a mixture of portland cement, peat moss, and perlite. It is very durable and attractive in any setting. Of course it reminds me of Spring which I can't wait for the season to come!

NeedlesAndKims says: I made this felted purse--all my items are made from repurposed wool sweaters (sometimes cashmere). I just love the way they feel and they're so easy to carry. I really like the color of this blue one and I used a vintage earring as a focal point for the dangling fibers. This was really fun to put together.

Fab Friday Finds

Last Saturday we were coming home from shopping at the public market. My husband suggested that we check out an estate sale sign he had seen on our way out. Somehow I totally missed seeing the signs but he took note. Smart man!

I love estate sales, garage sales, thrift stores, etc. Well I found this box full of vintage hankies, a bit of lace and a scarf. Like finding treasure!

They are all so lovely! Some with flowers, others with lace or crochet edge, 2 are even monogrammed! The soft pastels make me think of spring, and the deeper colors of autumn. Some have small stains so I will use the good portions of them to embellish scarves and journals. Some are just too beautiful to cut, but we'll see!

What would you do with them?

Favorite Handmade Things

My house is full of handmade things - furniture, window treatments, slipcovers and wall hangings to name a few.

Today I would like to share about one of my favorites.

It's an embroidered wall hanging that my mother made.
It hangs in our living room. It's actually a Christmas decoration, but I have it hanging up all year long.
It's nice to walk by it and reflect.
It brings me joy!

Crocheting While Rearranging

I promise that I will have pictures of my sewing room/workshop area!
I picked up some more furniture (bookcase and cupboard) yesterday on the cheap from a business that no longer needed these solid wood pieces.
So ... more cleaning and rearranging!

I have been working on some new scarves which I love, hope you will too. Made one for Christmas for a little girl (my granddaughter) and that got me started back crocheting! What do you think?

Wonderful Wednesday

I have emerged from the dust of my sewing room/studio after a week of cleaning, sorting and organizing! I managed to acquire a twin to my favorite Singer sewing machine with it's own cabinet! Great help in organizing since it has 3 drawers. I am almost finished getting the room the way I want it to be. Photos to follow soon!

New Year

Happy New Year! Feliz Dia de los Reyes Magos!
It's hard to believe that the holidays have come and gone, well, mostly. Today is Epiphany or The Day of the Three Kings in Spanish speaking countries. Tomorrow is Old Christmas or Orthodox Christmas and next Thursday is Orthodox New Year as celebrated in many countries including Russia and the Ukraine. In other words, I have found yet another excuse to keep the holiday decorations up a bit longer!
Any way, the snow keeps coming each day adding inch by inch to the mounds piling up around our house. I'm inside keeping warm and working on new projects - some new scarves, etc.

Peacock Decorations for Holidays and Beyond

After I started decorating my house for Christmas in lovely peacock shades of blue, green, turquoise and plum, I decided to share photos here. Then I was curious to see what others had that might fit the theme. I have found some beautiful, fun and whimsical items to share with you.

It was hard though to stay with the focus of decorative items because I ran into some gorgeous jewelry, clothing and accessories along the way. Maybe my next blog post will feature some of those!

Peacock Christmas Holiday Decorating

Usually I start my Christmas decorating the day after Thanksgiving but ... this year I couldn't quite get to it as I was busy with my shop, etc., so I'm still decorating. I'm almost done though, yeah!

Thought I'd share some photos. For the past 2 years I've wanted to coordinate my decorations with my home decor, focussing on teal, sapphire and avocado green with a bit of plum. So my house this year is decorated in peacock colors and it is so lovely!

Also, I decided against the big artificial tree which usually takes me a week to decorate by the time I pull it up out of the basement, along with the myriad boxes of lights, ornaments, extension cords, etc.

This year I've decorated this cool topiary that I acquired from a store closing a few years back (I was using the stand for craft shows!). It takes up less floor space and I was able to decorate it in a few days since it takes fewer ornaments and lights!

I've also incorporated my collection of blue and green glass bottles which I use as vases in the summer. For the holidays I've turned them into bottle trees! What do you think! Enjoy the photos!

Now I just need some peacock feathers!

Friday Blog Baking Chocolaty Chocolate

Today I am baking cocoa chocolate chip brownies with chocolate frosting. I firmly believe that if you are going to bake chocolate delights like cakes, brownies and cookies, that you have to make them really chocolaty (for some reason spell check doesn't like this word)! I'm taking most of them to a women's gathering tomorrow, which is a good thing since I enjoy chocolate.

Don't be misled by these photos! They are not all chocolate. I went through the food photos I have taken and couldn't find any cookies or brownies. I seem to have gobbled up the chocolate yummies before I could take any photos so these will have to do. They do look good don't they? By the way, what's your favorite chocolate dessert?

Then this afternoon I was reading some of the posts from blogs that I follow, I came across this post from Dacedesign about chocolate. Can you smell the chocolate! Read it and enjoy!

First Snow December First

Heard the plows go by early this morning! The first snow, white, crisp and cold! It's not really winter yet but the first snowfall means it can't be far away.

Took a few photos before much of it melted away but I missed the trees glopped with snow like someone had sprayed them with whipped cream. Take a peak and enjoy!

Slow Down, Look Around, Be Inspired

Lately I've become somewhat obsessed with taking photos of just about everything I see wherever I go. Most of the vegetation around my home has become a fitting subject as I practice with the various settings on my digital camera.

I have always admired the photography I've seen in various magazines and galleries. I appreciate taking a closer look at the world around us, taking what has become ordinary and creating a work of art.

I find that this has helped me to slow down, stop and observe more. Take time to smell the roses as it were. There is so much beauty around us, that it is all too easy to take it for granted.

The Last Dance of the Red Maple

Now that most of the leaves are gone and the morning frosts have arrived, I’m really enjoying all of the photos I took of the autumn leaves.

The colors have been spectacular in our area.
Brilliant reds, rich oranges and rust, vibrant greens and golden yellows!

I thought that for today I would share photos of one of my favorite trees (at least my favorite for now!).

We have this red maple tree which puts on an amazing show every spring and fall.

While I enjoy it in the spring because of the promise of warmth and new growth,
the fall colors really stand out against the grass and changing leaves on the nearby trees!

I hope you enjoy the red maple’s last dance for 2009 as much as I have.
